William Athel “Bill” Johnson, Sr., 76, of Battle Creek, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence after a long battle with cancer. He was born July 6, 1943 in Battle Creek the son of George and Jennive Johnson. He attended Battle Creek Public Schools. Bill went to work for the City of Battle Creek where he retired in 1998 after 30 plus years. He then went on to work for Ryder Trucking and had to retire again due to health reasons. In 2010, he went to work for Firekeepers Casino where he stayed until May of 2019 before he was forced to retire for good. Bill always made sure that people knew how much he loved them and he loved making people happy. Firekeepers was his second family and he absolutely loved working there and being around everyone. Bill enjoyed watching birds and spending time with his family and friends. He married his life partner of 27 years, Andrew Livingston on October 1, 2015, who preceded him in death in 2017.
Bill is survived by his children, Bill Johnson, Jr., Tina Johnson, Michael Johnson of CA, Stacy (Aaron) Wixson, and step-son, Byron (Sarah) Livingston; grandchildren, Tonie (James) Gazso, Jamie Johnson, Andrew (Daniel) Cocker, Michael Johnson, Samantha Johnson, Madalin Wixson, Taylor Wixson, and step-grandchildren, Ashlynn and Rylan Livingston; Nine great grandchildren; siblings, Jerry (Glenda) Johnson and Terrie (Roger) Vincent; Uncle, Lawrence Johnson; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; special friend, Anna Lutzka; and the Firekeepers EVS crew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; husband, Andrew Livingston; siblings, Leonard and David Johnson, Delores (Lester) Keyes, Georgia Frayer, and step-sister, Connie Poll.
Visitation will be held at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service on Thursday, February 6th from 2:00-4:00 PM and from 6:00-8:00 PM. A celebration of life service will be held Friday at 11:00 AM at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service with a visitation one hour prior at 10:00 AM. Burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek, MI. In lieu of flowers memorial tributes may be made to the American Cancer Society, Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence, or American Heart Association.
